What Those FREE Trainings Are Really Costing You

First off, to be clear, I am a huge fan of constant learning, attending events and  training webinars. I love free trainings and give away tons of free training too ( Check it out on my free training tab on this site). But I find a lot of people attending these trainings falling into a trap, one that is unhealthy for their business and their personal growth.

It’s o.k to attend trainings … In fact,  I highly recommend it. But your motive behind attending the training will have an enormous effect on whether or not they will be beneficial to you. If you are attending yet another webinar and not having any success, it may be time to do some self reflection to see what is really going on.

Here are some things to consider and ask yourself before you attend your next training:

Are you looking for a magic pill?

Is this your 4th webinar this month on Instagram, yet you haven’t consistently implemented anything from the first three trainings? Are you looking for the magic button you press and leads and sales pour in? 

Truth is, there is no magic pill. You need to go through the process and you need to do the work. Try it, master a skill. Stick to the method for at least 90 days before you add anything new.

You don’t need to know everything.

You really don’t. You can be a leader without having all the answers. It’s much better to be great at one thing and sharing that knowledge with the world rather than trying to perfect everything but never really doing anything with the knowledge you acquired.

Truth is, that one thing you learned can really help someone if you use the skill.

Are you procrastinating?

Are you not willing to take action on that which you already know ? Perhaps it is out of fear . Perhaps it is because of lack of confidence or unwillingness to get out of your comfort zone, using more training as an excuse not to implement what you already know.

If that’s the case, it is time to get unstuck and take some action to get out of this cycle. Start small but take some action on something you have learned in your training rather than becoming an expert at attending training.

There is nothing that activity can’t solve.

Does that mean you need to  skip the next training? Absolutely not! Whatever it is you are mastering in your home business, learn everything you can about it, but implement your learning.

Stop looking for that magic pill, don’t think you need to know everything about everything and stop procrastinating.

It’s costing you. It’s costing the people that need your expertise.

There are people waiting for you to step up. There’s someone out there waiting for you to write that email, make that video or write the blog post just like someone needed to read this blog post. They want to hear from you! Go show them what ‘ya got!

How to Earn 6 Figures Selling T-shirts Online With Print On Demand

Gone are the days of printing thousands of t-shirts and  carrying inventory that doesn’t sell. There’s a new way of trying out your t-shirt selling idea that let’s you be creative and minimizes the risk. No need to carry inventory. No need to spend a lot of upfront capital. No need to quit your job to start the new venture. It’s fairly easy and anyone can do it. Here are a few general steps and and an overview to get you started on your first campaign and selling t-shirts online:

When you market to everyone, you market to no one. Pick a specific target market. For instance, you may want to market to women who golf or women who run. Knowing your market will determine style, design and how you advertise.

Choose a platform

When it comes to selling t-shirts online, there are a ton of great platforms out there that allow you to create a t-shirt, tank top, hoodie.. you name it.  You can design it, set pricing, sell and ship through their platform and they are free to join. They help you set a price that will put you in profit, Some companies have minimums and won’t ship unless you reach those minimums.. Some allow you to sell one-offs . They take their portion and the profit is yours. Some of those platforms include teespring.com and viralstyle.com to name a couple.

Market and sell

Notice how quotes and pictures go viral on Facebook?  Cool t-shirt designs can do the same. There are a variety of ways to market online, from using a Facebook fan page dedicated to your niche and/or placing ads on Facebook, twitter or other Social Media platforms. You can also start a niche website, providing valuable content about your niche and advertising the t-shirts to your visitors. 

Selling t-shirts and other “print on demand” products is a simple and low cost way to get your start in an online business venture.

Combining Value and Leverage in Your Life

Years ago someone shared with me a valuable tip about creating and providing value. It was so obvious, but so often neglected. I wrote about it in my previous blog post here. 

Your earnings are directly related to the amount of value your business provides, I was told.

There are many ways employees and entrepreneurs can provide more value:

They can increase their value by educating themselves, learning more skills and thus being more valuable simply because their skillset has improved and are able to offer their employer or customers more.

They can always work harder and longer. They can put in more hours, show up early and work late… There is nothing wrong with this by the way. Working hard, putting in long hours is the way a lot of people make a living and are able to pay their bills, put the kids through school, save for retirement and live very fulfilling lives. …

It has it’s limitations, however.

The problem with the latter,  is that many people are already working as much as they can work. They simply can’t give any more of their time but have hit a ceiling in their income. There’s nothing more to give.

That’s where leverage comes in.

Combining value and the power of leverage in your life can not only increase your income but your time freedom too.

Business owners know about leverage. They know that when they increase their productivity with employees, with more tools or machinery, they are leveraging these tools to create more without sacrificing more time. They know the importance of having the means of  scaling their production, distribution and their customer base via tools, employees, teams, the internet, automated systems.

Real Estate brokerages, insurance brokerages and mortgage brokerages use leverage by hiring agents. They generate income from the efforts of the agents, while the agents bring in the customers and build the brand.

Network Marketers build teams. They continue to provide value to the customers but by building and training their teams, they increase the value they are bringing to the world, without compromising their time freedom.

Franchises are another way that businesses can grow by leveraging systems that have been created to save them time, both on the learning curve of running a new business as well as the time frame it would normally take to build a new brand and customer base.

BUT Here is my favourite example of combining leverage and value …

Internet Marketers, bloggers and digital franchise owners understand the power of combining value and leverage very well. Constantly providing value, via trainings, blog posts, youtube videos but leveraging the internet ( so that their content is available 24-7) as well as systems  (lead capture pages, sales videos working day and night, and often coaches and sales teams working on their behalf).

The result is more than just increased earnings. The result is a message, a product a vision that needs to be seen, heard and utilized reaching more people with less effort.

Here are some of the ways I create value and use leverage to increase my reach:

  • I blog. I write content and I leverage the internet so that my content is available anytime, anywhere there is an internet connection.
  • I use automation. Auto-responders and software help me get my message out.
  • I use Social Media and leverage the power of my connections, my friends and the ability for my content to go viral.
  • I outsource things that aren’t my strength or do not produce income for me. Not only does this speed things up for me but it allows me to focus on productive activities that don’t take up too much of my time.
  • I use systems. My business has a system in place that I did not create. It’s filled with valuable trainings. Coaches speak to new members and prospective clients. Payment processing is in place. The system works for me while I sleep. The system allows me to spend my time, blogging, creating videos and my free time with my family while it works for me.

Ask yourself if there are ways you leverage your efforts and the value you bring to the world. How can you scale things so that your efforts are more productive and profitable without compromising your time. How can you reach more people? How can you stop trading hours for dollars?

Why I decided to market a physical product

Potions, pills and powders … Oh my!

I am blogger, an internet marketer… a network marketer. I am successful Mortgage specialist. So .. what that means is that  I have sold and marketed a variety of products …but  none of them physical products. No potions, pills or powders for me… I always said.

And, the experts told me that digital products were better – Truthfully I agree that there are tremendous benefits in selling digital products and I continue to market digital products.

It just makes sense.

~ You don’t carry any inventory

~ There are no shipping costs you will incur as a vendor.

~ You won’t get stuck with unsold or expired items.

~ It’s quick and convenient, downloadable. All sales are done online.

~ Systems and funnels and online sales presentations make sales easy.

BUT recently something changed.

I was actually looking for a physical product for myself, for some pain and sleep issues surrounding fibromyalgia. I had a need and I found someone to fulfill the need. As a marketer, looking at it from the perspective of both a marketer and a CONSUMER, I had a profound realization.

Great businesses succeed because they solve a consumer’s problem.

I had a problem that needed a solution.

I found a quality physical product that would solve the problem.

10 million people in the U.S alone have a similar problem.

So remind me again why selling “a physical product” doesn’t work, as the interenet marketing experts say .. and why network marketing with physical products is a bad idea?

For the record, my post isn’t about weight loss products or products to help fibromyalgia . What it is about, is recognizing that  there is often a stigma attached to marketing and selling physical products  – shakes, potions, pills and I wanted to dispel some myths…about the dreaded autoship, about earning any ‘real’ commissions with physical products .

I must admit that I myself had doubts about the ability to earn any real commissions. I struggled with the thought of the autoship. I wondered if anyone joined these companies for the products or just for the opportunity.

And then I looked at it from the point of view of a Marketer and a Consumer whose problem was being solved. All of a sudden the autoship made more sense and the ability to earn an income from millions of people who needed a problem solved seemed easy. AND

~ You don’t carry any inventory

~ You won’t get stuck with unsold or expired items.

~ It’s quick and convenient, (not downloadable but  All sales are done online).

~ Systems and funnels and online sales presentations maKe sales easy.

Sounds just like selling the digital product, doesn`t it?  

Home Parties and Network Marketing

Home parties were just never my thing. I never understood the promise of freedom to moms who had to leave home to attend home parties to sell products. Where`s the freedom in that?

The industry has  come a long way since just party plans and selling door to door. Selling physical products in Network Marketing or Affiliate marketing is not like it used to be  and they are now combined with systems and pay plans to help the average person succeed.

This  doesn’t mean that digital products or physical products are the only way. Instead of asking the questions digital or physical, high ticket or low ticket… ask yourself this:

Does the company have an actual product or service that has a market value, something you can  use, and get benefit from?

Is this a product you would buy and use the yourself?

Does the product or service fit into what you’re passionate about?

Is the start up cost affordable? (high ticket doesn’t always mean high profit if you aren’t making sales and no one wants to buy)

Does the company offer a way, a plan, a team culture that could help the average person succeed.

Is freedom possible ? ( I am talking more than just compensation plan here…can you do it from home? Will you be on the phone day and night? Do you need to be presenting all the time? Is there some automation ?)

Will the product be marketable for many years to come?

Because I was able to find a product and company that answered these questions in a way that was in line with what I was looking for, I decided to add a physical product to my inventory of things I promote.

What Twitter Training Taught Me About Teachability

Twitter and I are old friends. When I first started using Twitter, I filled a room full of strangers at an event I was hosting within just weeks of joining the Social platform. I was hooked. I was engaging, having a blast, increasing my online presence. It was great.

That was years ago. And years ago, various experts gave me a long list of how to’s, not to’s and best practices that I held on to for years.

Then, a few years later, another group of people told me that Twitter wasn’t the place to be. That you would need to reach a ton of people and that it was impossible to build a business using twitter …

I admit, some people sold me on the fact that you should never automate. Never send an automatic reply. Never this. Never that.

… and because I once filled a room with strangers from marketing on Twitter, I thought I knew it all. I admit, I thought I knew Twitter and I gave up on my ‘ol friend.

I still tweeted here and there knowing that it was important to keep my presence there but I didn’t use it to the fullest potential because I had made some assumptions, some decisions, and thought I knew better.

I had ceased to be teachable.

Fast forward to just a few weeks ago when I, for just a moment came to the table with an empty cup and decided that it was time to hear someone out who was having great success with Twitter and I learned a valuable lesson along the way.

(Hint: This post really isn’t just about Twitter Training)

The person teaching the training was having amazing success getting leads and sales from Twitter. Sounds like someone I should listen to, I thought… and I did.  I listened. I soaked it up. I implemented. The very next morning, after implementing what I had learned I had targeted leads in my inbox.

The lesson here is bigger than twitter training. The lesson here is about teachability.

Do you think I haven’t been to other Twitter trainings before?  Some of them would have meant a lot to my business, had I been open to learning and implementing what I learned.

What we often do, however, is decide that we know better when the truth is, we should be seeking knowledge from people who have what we want.

Are you teachable?  Do you go to trainings saying… “yeah but” or “ I already know this”. Being teachable means being open and willing to learn. When you cease to be teachable you are closed to a world of possibilities.

It’s when we realize that we don’t know what we don’t know that things can start changing.

And it’s when we go open-minded and ready to learn to those that know what we want to know, and those that have the results we want to have, that we are teachable again and things start changing… 

You might want to read that again.

Here’s  what distinguishes teachable from the unteachable:

  • Successful people are teachable. They are always open to learning and they know their success depends on it.
  • Teachable people listen and ask questions. They don’t just talk.
  • Teachable people are open to constructive criticism because they want to improve.
  • Teachable people aren’t afraid to ask for help.
  • Those that are teachable are O.K with trying and making mistakes. They know that in the process, they are learning and know there will be more lessons to learn.
  • They go beyond the minimum required when learning. They take notes. They read…. And they don’t just read the required readings… they read the recommended readings as well.
  • Teachable people are willing to admit when they are wrong and when someone else knows better.

Nothing Happens Until You Move

Start small, dream huge but begin today.

That’s the message I got in my inbox today from one of my favourite leadership experts, Robin Sharma. Nothing happens until you take massive action.

It got me thinking about action and why so many people know exactly what they need to do, but they don’t do it.

They procrastinate. They make excuses. They even quit.

Truth is, fear and overwhelm take over. But it does not need to be this way. Staying where you are, not taking action because of fear will only keep you stuck.

Taking massive action doesn’t need to be something that has you shaking at the knees not knowing what to do. Taking massive action can be as simple as taking small daily action steps to start towards your outrageous goal, taking larger steps, and more risk as you go along.

Here are a few things that may help you take the action you need to take:

Get in touch with the fear. Why are you stuck. What’s really going on? Is it a past failure? Is it time? It could be as simple as the task at hand might be beyond your expertise (that might be a sign to outsource!) Bottom line is,knowing what’s going on will help you determine what you need to do next.

Do something easy. Do something easy but productive. Just DO SOMETHING. Call a prospect you have a good rapport with. Send out an email to your list. Follow up with your current customers. Do something that won’t overwhelm you but is productive and can yield results – results that will help you to keep moving forward rather than remain stuck.

Do something difficult. Contrary to the previous step, sometimes doing the very thing that will get you out of your comfort zone might be just what you need to move forward. Everything else after that will be a snap!

Review your goals. Revisit your “why”. Sometimes, not focusing on the action but what the ultimate goal and your ‘Why”  might be the motivation needed to take the action.

Commit to the Power of 5. Take 5 action steps every day. 5 paces forward every day gets you closer to your destination. I wrote a post about this here.

Master the Basics in Your Home Business

We live in an interesting time. Instant this. Automatic this. Get this widget, that gadget, get into this system, buy this, take this course, install this… and it seems we have forgotten to Master the Basics.

It makes my head spin.

Now, don’t get me wrong. I love tools.. I love learning and I suggest that you as an entrepreneur are open to change and learning. But…

Somewhere along the way, I think people get lost in the madness.

We’ve jumped ahead. We look at what everyone else is doing and try to master it all thinking that if you just try this other thing, you will get the success you are looking for.

Problem is, we haven’t taken the time to master and implement the basic concepts and we’re already looking at what else we can do.

Years ago someone introduced me to the concept of mastering the basics – something that is so unbelievably simple but so necessary in order to learn and progress.

Yet, for some reason it is so easy to stray from this. We think we know more and that we are often beyond that so we jump ahead, only to hit a brick wall again. Why is that? It’s a reminder that we need to get back to the basics. When we master the basics, only then should we even contemplate moving forward.

I just learned the same from a Professional in list building …. she reminded me of the importance of taking direction and mastering the basics. There’s a lot of broke marketers out there and it’s because they haven’t taken the freshman/undergrad class yet and they already want to jump to their masters degree.

Remember Karate kid? Wax on, Wax off?

It might seem a little tedious, even boring to practice the same thing over and over again. We all want to get to the bigger more exciting stuff. But none of the bigger and more exciting stuff will work until we have mastered the basics.

Think about it.

In soccer, do players ever stop practicing dribbling and controlling the ball. No. They practice this basic skill over and over again until they master it and then they master it some more.

In arithmetic, do you think the student can move on to algebra and calculus if they haven’t mastered basic multiplication or division?

Ask yourself in whatever you are doing in your home business. Have you taken the time to learn and master the basics? Have you stuck to something, mastered it to the tune of wax on wax off,  long enough to see the method to the madness, before you jump to the next thing?  

If you are marketing a product, are you using one method of marketing consistently for at least 90 days before jumping ship and giving up or trying something new yet again?

I challenge you, if you are stuck and find yourself spinning your wheels and hitting a brick wall.. get back to the basics.

What This Big Gulp Container Taught Me About Team Culture and Leadership

I’ve been part of some teams – past and present. I’ve seen some thrive and I have seen some dwindle away and I have seen a team like no other, grow and take on an almost magical, contagious, positive personality.

Team culture – that’s what it is and it’s more important than you think.

Some time in 2016  I was blessed to be added to a mastermind group with an amazing group of  Internet marketers and heart-centred entrepreneurs led by Laura Parrish. She called her group #TNS (Team No Sleep- and often she doesn’t as the name suggests). What happened in the last few sessions of a regular team mastermind online was interesting, to say the least and it got me really thinking about Team Culture and Leadership. 

You see, Laura has this huge jug… nothing fancy … just a huge “Big Gulp” jug that she fills with her drink of choice, Diet Pepsi, that is by her side while she works and during the masterminds.

Laura simply mentioned her jug and  showed it to us on a mastermind. She didn’t tell anyone to buy it. She didn’t say that this was a prerequisite to being in the group. She smiled, told us how she fills her jug everyday…jokingly calling it her “crackbucket” … and then… what happened next was crazy.

Members messaging each other on where to get one in the U.S and in Canada.

Members offering to ship them out to each other.

Hmmm? What was happening here?

Was buying one of these going to make us better Internet marketers? (don’t think so)

Laura never told anyone to buy one.

Many of us professed  that we aren’t fans of pop anyway. (And frankly, the jug is a little tacky.)

What happened is that a leader created something called Team Culture and she did it by way of great leadership.

 

Why is team culture and great leadership so important? 

Truth is, people want to be part of something. Plain and simple. Inside jokes, team t-shirts, inner circles create a sort of unity, camaraderie amongst people. When a good leader makes a team atmosphere appealing and worth sticking around for, team culture is created.

Creating culture means creating an experience. Individuals feel like they have something in common – a special bond, something similar that they can identify with.

The team t-shirts or the “Big Gulp” containers are more than just merchandise. They are part of strengthening an identity and spirit. They inspire creativity.

Great leaders do a great job at being supportive and accessible. They motivate and they inspire. They keep you accountable and they keep you coming back for more.  By doing this they create  comfort, trust, communication, improved morale. People have fun and they  enjoy work more!

Not just in Network Marketing.. Team Culture is important in any business

Similarly, I am also lucky to be a part of an amazing team at a Mortgage Brokerage.  I and my colleagues also  have a team culture that was created by a committed leader.

As mortgage agents, we have our own personal goals we work towards, yet as a team, even though we do not benefit from another mortgage agent reaching their goals, we are constantly cheering each other.

It’s not about the money.

We are excited when someone  else does well. We are excited when we are able to help clients. We help each other. We give each other ideas. We learn from each other. Negativity has no place in our office. We have fun and we get things done. We are certainly more productive because of it. This was created because of teamwork and culture created by the Broker, our friend and leader.

Do you want to become a leader or be part of an amazing team?  Here’s what leaders do that you need to keep in mind:

1. Leaders are accessible and approachable. They don’t disappear after they have made money off you. They are interested in supporting You and you feel it.. By doing so, they are not only helping you succeed but growing their team, appearing more desireable as a team to join and growing as leaders.

2. Leaders motivate and inspire. They use words to build people up and not bring them down. They know what to say. They are positive and will keep the morale up.

3. Leaders don’t do all the work. They involve you and keep you accountable. They show you the way and then let you take over.

4. Leaders edify and encourage. It’s important to recognize your team for their wins big and small both privately  and publicly. In Network Marketing and Internet Marketing, leaders post pictures and descriptions of their team members’ accomplishments all over Social Media!

 5. Leaders are ethical and honest. They communicate and are open not secretive and unscrupulous.

 6. Leaders walk the walk. They lead by example. They don’t just tell you what to do. They show you what they are doing.. by doing it.

 7. Leaders continue to grow and educate themselves. When you are in a position of a leader, you haven’t reached some magical destination where you know everything and never and never need to learn anything again. True leaders know that they are more valuable to their team when they are constantly learning and passing on that knowledge.

By doing this, leaders create team culture.… and when you have a leader like that, I bet if she has a Big Gulp sitting in front of her desk, you’ll want one too… commissions included or not.

5 ways to work your online home business without really working during the holidays

Whether it is the Fourth of July, Christmas holidays, Spring Break or Summer Holidays,  it can be difficult to manage family fun and social activities while still building and keeping revenue flowing in your home business.

… but it isn’t impossible and can be done with just a few tweaks to your current daily activity. It is especially fun and easy to do in an online business. And if your business involves positive change for your clients, the holidays are a perfect time to continue marketing as people are ready for change in the new year and they are searching for you to provide them a solution. There is a huge opportunity to actually increase your business and clientelle during the holidays without losing your mind.

Here are 5 tips you can implement immediately to prepare for the holidays and be able to spend time with your family:

1. Create and schedule your blog posts well in advance. Imagine having 10 ready to go blog posts that get Screen-Shot-2015-12-10-at-4.03.46-PMpublished automatically every day during the holidays. Providing value to your clients and prospects during the holidays while you are sipping eggnog… It’s a win-win. Imagine how amazing and dedicated you appear to your readers. And truth be told, whether they know you are sipping egg nog or not, you are dedicated because you prepared it for them in advance! Most blogging platforms allow you to schedule posts in advance so there is no need to login and publish your drafts AT ALL during the holidays!

2. Have a a lead capture page in place. Whether  you are currently running an online business or not, you should and need to have something in place where you can capture the names and emails of people who are interested in your business. This is a key in automating any type of business. The ability to capture leads and make sales even while you are sleeping or out singing Christmas Carols is absolutely necessary.

Automate it even further by having a preset campaign of emails going to your prospects and you are set. I use MLSP for my capture page and Get Response for my autoresponder. You can also use a variety of different autoresponder services from free ones like Mailchimp to Aweber. . They key is to do this before the holidays so you are set to work without really working.

3. Schedule social media posts. I don’t wait for  upcoming holidays to implement this. I use Hootesuite to schedule posts on all my Social media platforms well in advance. You can manage up to 5 Social Media accounts for free on Hootesuite. I personally prefer to set a certain time aside once or twice a week to schedule posts. Then I return every so often to engage with others and post something relevant .

holiday-pic-e14497813313014. Take pictures! Take advantage of the “social” part of the Holidays and implement it in your marketing. Some refer to this as lifestyle marketing. It does not take any more time to take some quick photos during the holidays of you having fun. These can easily be added or implemented in your marketing during or after the holidays. People love happiness. Post some ‘happy’ pictures during the holidays.

5. Put it all together. To be truly successful during the holidays without losing your mind, you will learn to put all the above steps together. Create your blog posts, schedule them to be published and emailed via your autoresponder. Schedule those blog posts to be posted on all your Social Media platforms as well and make sure all of this content going out has a way of collecting the leads via a Lead capture page so that you can continue to market to them and make sales while you are having fun!

It might sound complicated but it isn’t. Once done, there is very little to do to maintain. The point is leveraging the automation ability of these tools and the fact that the internet never sleeps so that your business isn’t barely surviving during the holidays but thriving.
