There Are Only 4 Things You Do In A Home Business

There are only 4 things only you do in a home business…

When one of the trainings I attended introduced this concept to me, I was all over it. 4 key things to focus on in business… and you are golden! Sounds simple? That’s because it is.

Yes, there are a lot of moving parts within these 4 things but they all fall into these 4 basic things.

The truth is, people tend to over-complicate things in business… always looking for more complex things to add to the equation, hoping that this other tool or that other opportunity will fix what is wrong but really if you just take a moment and focus on these 4 basic things to determine where there might be a gap, you may just alter your results in a profound way.

Learn those 4 things, focus on those 4 things… and everything will change.  Some have dubbed these the 4 C’s of business, I call them the Fundamental Four:


Simply put, you need to have a way to “collect” viewers, eyeballs, visitors.  In an online business, this could include Facebook lives, blogging, banner advertising and social media, to name a few methods. In any other business, it could include anything like print advertising, radio, television, signs… anything that gets people to see you and gets them through the door whether it be onto a website page, or literally through the doors of your place of business.

There could be thousands of ways. You should have a few that you focus on with consistency.

Ask yourself every day… what are you doing to get those “eyeballs”? 


So, you have got them onto you site, in your store, at your open house… whatever the case may be for your business. Don’t fool yourself, they can be gone in an instant, never to be seen again. All that effort to get them there … wasted! But, it doesn’t need to be that way. The secondgoes hand in hand with the first. Don’t bring them there, only to lose them. Instead, “Capture” them, get their info!

On the internet, in the home business arena,  we us what we call  a capture page, opt-in page or lead capture page – a way to have prospects, potential customers give you their information willingly, usually in exchange for something of value, basically giving you permission to market to them!

Other ways to do this, perhaps in an offline business would be to collect business cards, add visitors info to your phone, offer contests or discounts in exchange for their information.

Got an event going on… ask people to sign in!

Bottom line: How are you capturing people’s information so that you can speak to them over and over again?  How are you generating leads? How are you maximizing the value of the “eyeballs” you are collecting ?


Leads are useless unless you have a plan to communicate with them. You must have a method of communicating with people regularly until they are ready to make a buying decision.


Mail/Post cards

Facebook message

Social Media/ Facebook Groups/

Phone/ text and calls



Once you have  collected them, captured them …you absolutely need to have a plan to communicate with these people repeatedly and do it in a way that they want to receive the ongoing communication from you.

Send content and provide value via email or mail (an email autoresponder like Get Response or Aweber is essential). Send them something relevant to them and what had their eyeballs on you in the first place. Send them your blog posts, links to valuable videos. Let them know what’s new, when you have an upcoming event, a webinar … get them to love you and expect you in their inbox, their mailbox, their phone. 


You must also have a  plan to get them in front of your offer so they can make a buying decision when they are ready.  The key here is when they are ready.

They may not be ready when  you first ” Collect” them. When you ” Capture” their info, they are just beginning to trust you… getting to know you enough to give you permission to market to them. 

Communicating with them on a regular basis is where they are getting to really know you and decide if they like you and if what you are about is what they are really looking for. After these 3 are in place, and only then make sure your you have a way to present your offer.

It is essential that you  learn to mass communicate and get your offer in front of a lot of people. Sometimes this is in the form of an email to your list, telling them about your offer. Sometimes, it is a webinar, tele-seminar, or event you invite your list to where you will present them your offer….

The point is… you need all 4 of these to be working in order to make sales…. and if you are not getting the results you want, there is a gap somewhere in the Fundamental Four that you need to evaluate and fill.

The Importance Of Having Systems In Place

Grasp the importance of this and you will achieve extraordinary results in your business:

Have a marketing system in place that will work for you even when you are not working.

Yesterday I was at a very important family and cultural event celebrating  St. Anthony. I have been going to this celebration/pilgramage for as long as I can remember (since I was a young child) and have never missed it except when I was out of the country once or twice. Bottom line is… it’s important to me.

Interestingly though, I still have prospects interested in my business and product offerings and have the ability to make sales even though I am nowhere near my computer and did not pick up the phone yesterday because I had a system in place to take care of these interested prospects for me.

Following up with my leads to aid them in the buying decision

We can’t be everywhere and working all the time. The whole point for me is having more time freedom with my family and loved ones. 

No matter what business you are in, if you are online and want to maximize your profitability you should be doing the following to automate your business as much as possible:

Create a compelling lead capture page 

Have a way of presenting your product to your prospects and a way to convert them to sales even when you are not available.

Have a means of following up with these prospects automatically via an autoresponder.  

This does not need to replace personal interaction. If you love being on the phone all day and presenting and if it is working for you, go ahead but add this element and automate your business online and you just found a way to make money while you sleep.

Why Many Network Marketers Fail…

Now, before I dive into this, let me say that I am not against Network Marketing. Quite the contrary, I think that Direct Sales and  Network Marketing are an extremely lucrative means of ordinary people achieving extraordinary results and success. 

Why then do so many of them fail or give up?

Aside from the belief that this is “easy street” and overnight riches, (which it clearly is not, no matter how great your product is) I think people are sometimes given the wrong tools and given a false sense of what their ‘warm’ market can do.

They are told to make a list of friends and family and start recruiting. Many of them are sold on the idea that if they just get two and they get two and so on and so on.. the residuals will just start pouring in …and this is so far from the truth.

Truth is, this is not a sustainable model for a variety of reasons. 

First off, friends and family are not necessarily your target market and won’t duplicate what you are doing.  Yes, I “get” that you shouldn’t prequalify your prospective team members  and that “ you never know” who might be a great leader in your organization but targeting your family and friends and expecting them to duplicate is hit and miss and you are limiting yourself and setting yourself up for failure. 

That’s where leveraging the internet comes in and came make the world of difference. Leverage the internet, brand yourself and be the hunted rather than the hunter, hunted by tons of like minded individuals searching for what you have to offer because they are attracted by you, your story and what you have to offer. 

Having  a system market for  you 24/7 is key so you don’t run out of leads and prospects . The internet never turns off. 

I do it by blogging.  Add Social Media, and provide value that people are looking for and you can create an endless stream of customers for any business.

Now keep in mind, the internet is not meant to replace what you are currently doing but add to it. If meetings and one-on-one interaction is working and helping you build your business, I encourage you to continue but if you have a way of reaching a limitless amount of people who are actually interested in what you have to offer  and able to have  your offer in front of them even while you sleep, I think it is worth your while to explore it as well.  Add to that, a very duplicable model, where your new team is able to follow in your steps, brand themselves and attract like-minded individuals into their organization and you have created something phenomenal.

Over-complicating your online business

It can be so overwhelming starting online. Where do I market? How do I market? Who do I market to? What’s HTML? Do I need to know HTML? Lead capture – what’s that?

I think we overcomplicate things really. It does not need to be difficult and it is not. It isn’t “get rich quick” …but,  leveraging the internet for any business can be extremely lucartive and speed things up considerably as you have the ability to reach more people, in less time, and often when you sleep!

Here are a few tips and tricks:

– Find one marketing technique to drive traffic that you do well, master it and do it regularly. Don’t try to do everything at once. If you are great at Social Media, stick to it and only add another marketing/advertising method once you have mastered or automated that. If paid ads are your thing, do that.

– Don’t overcomplicate a website or blog. Unless, you are in the business of web development or web design, don’t re-invent the wheel. Find something that is either ready to go (like my blog. This is the system and blogging platform I use.) or outsource. Outsourcing is the more expensive route but ask yourself this – Am I in the business of X (selling widgets, marketing digital products etc) or am I a web designer/developer? Focus on what makes you money and what your business is and leave the technical stuff to the techies.

– Don’t forget to capture leads and have an automated way to correspond with your list and a way to connect with them personally as well.

In my business, when someone enters their information, they are directed to a presentation and have the option to join my team right away. I am set up so I make sales while I sleep. If they don’t join, they are on my list and I can continue to provide them value and build a relationship with them.

Again, this does not need to be overcomplicated. If you are new and just looking for something to do online, you can join a business opportunity that has this already in place or have it set up for a minimal cost. Once set up, the formula is easy:

Drive trafic  > Capture leads > Get Sales and build relationships/customers

Keep it simple. The point is leveraging the internet to live a better life and help with your success, not to overburden and stress yourself out.

How To Build Your List Offline

If you have been around Internet marketing, you know that list building is critical to your online success. How many times have you heard it said, ‘the money is in the list’? And because, as Internet Marketers we are so wrapped up in list building online, we often overlook a great source of targeted leads. By doing so, we are leaving money on the table!

Instead of just building your list online, why not build your list OFFLINE?!  Here are some list building ideas that will increase your lead list  faster than you can blink your eyes!

Meetup Groups is a hotspot for leads for ANY business! Simply go to to find groups that your target market is using. Before you go to a Meetup, contact the organizer. Tell them who you are, and ask if there is someone in the group that you should know. Your goal is to connect with the right amount of  people, as you will want to meet with them one on one at a later time.

Not only should you attend a Meetup group, but start your own! This alone puts you in a position of authority. Whatever group you start, make it a ‘beginner’ group. A beginner group will draw people to you that want what you have. An expert in your field will not necessarily come to your group. Give free or low-cost classes, and have a sign in sheet and collect business cards. Voila! List building has just happened!

 TIP: also has a sponsorship feature that allows you to add advertisements to your group. Use that to promote any relevant affiliate offers.

Networking Events

Networking Events don’t get the  recognition they deserve. If you do it right, networking events can be a great source of leads.

For a while I ran a networking group for Moms in business… The one thing I was very much against is the 30 second pitch… Getting in front of the group to introduce yourself and what you do. Trust me, more than likely the people will not remember you and you have failed to do one of the most important things that offline networking should succeed in and that is building a connection and a relationship.

The way my group worked is by acting more like a “Mastermind” group. Business owners would discuss issues in their business and ask for advice. Not only did this allow them to find and provide solutions for the other networkers in the room but true relationships were built. People truly got to know each other and each other’s expertise. You do business with people you know and trust right?

Speaking Engagements

Usually people start running in the other direction when it comes to speaking. There is no better way to have an impact on a large number of targeted people than with speaking engagements. Seek them out!

By overlooking offline list building opportunities, you are cutting out what can be a significant revenue source. You can build a following offline and then invite them to follow you online. Many successful marketers have followed this model and are generating six figures and above. Get out in your community and get connected!

3 Ways to Find Your Target Market on Facebook

There are almost a billion users on Facebook.

It could be a country of its own!

With almost a billion users, there is really no way you can run out of people to talk to. You certainly don’t want to talk to ALL of them. The problem at hand is how to find the right people to talk to. You could try to go through a billion people one by one, but you’ll probably die before you get to them all. Wouldn’t it be better to spend your time connecting with people you WANT to talk to? Wouldn’t it be better to know how to find your target market? I’m going to share a few methods that will help you find targeted people to connect with, so you can generate more leads and make more money using Facebook.

Where is your target market getting their information?

Who is a thought leader or trendsetter in your industry?

If you train people on real estate investing, your target market is probably on Donald Trump’s fan page. If you are a cosmetics consultant, your target market may be on Kim Kardashian’s page. The reason this works is that thought leaders and trendsetters have a huge following. These leaders aren’t going to connect with an individual. There is only one-way communication happening here. You will fill that void. You are offering a personal connection to the value they are trying to obtain by ‘hanging out’ with these celebrities.

Join targeted groups

There are thousands and thousands of groups on Facebook. You need to find the ones your target market is active in. There are some do’s and don’ts though. Here are some things to keep in mind:
* Make sure the group is active
* Join groups that have at least 500 people
* Share valuable content
* Comment on other group member updates
* Share other group members’ content
* Don’t spam the group with an opportunity
* Don’t spam other people’s walls

By consistently interacting with a group, you will generate leads for your business. Pay attention when someone asks a question. Provide an answer – whether it’s with content you’ve created, or content created by someone else. You will establish yourself as an authority figure by providing valuable content to the group.


I know that sounds kind of sneaky, but this really is a cool tool. Simply go to the search box and type in a topic of conversation. If you get a list of options, click ‘All Results’ at the bottom of the dropdown. At that point, you should get a list that looks like this:

Choose the option for ‘Public Posts’. Anybody who posted about the topic you chose will show up in your results. You can look through the profiles, and choose who you want to connect with. 

Here’s an extra tip: You don’t want to send a friend request here. You want to send a direct message asking them to connect. You might say something like, “Hey John, I see you’re a football fan. So am I. [Find something in common] Who’s your favorite team?” At some point, you send a message that says, “Let’s be Facebook friends. If you’re OK with that, send a friend request.” 

By doing this, you are allowing your prospect to request being friends with you, and you’re not requesting a friend you don’t know. This keeps you out of trouble with Facebook!

Using either of these methods consistently will generate leads for your business. You can implement these methods in as little as 15-20 minutes per day. If you want to start increasing leads for your business, implement one of these methods today!

5 Steps to Email Marketing Success

Email marketing is an essential tool for businesses using the Internet. As a matter of fact, major corporations use email marketing – Wal-Mart, JC Penny, Kelloggs. 

Email marketing is effective because it is permission-based. Companies can build relationships with targeted people because they have given permission for the company to email them, and they have already expressed interest in the product or service the company has to offer. Small business owners, entrepreneurs, network marketers, and freelancers can do the same thing; however, they normally don’t have the budget to hire an expert email marketer to develop and implement an email marketing strategy. Small business owners have to do it themselves. Unfortunately, most business owners (no matter what type) don’t know how to use email marketing effectively. This post will share five essential elements to email marketing success!

Step 1 – Get the email address!
The first indispensable step to email marketing is to get an email address! With people receiving so much email these days, they are very cautious about signing up to receive more. It is imperative that you make an offer your target market CAN’T refuse. You have to give your market a reason to sign up on your mailing list. A simple ‘sign up to get my newsletter’ just ain’t gonna cut it. You need to go big! You need to offer a free report that eases a pain your target market is feeling. You might offer a series of videos, or even a CD or DVD. The stakes are high and you often get just one chance to impress your reader. 

Step 2 – Use an Email Service Provider
This is an expense, but it is well worth the investment to build your business. Yes there are free email service providers, but to get the benefits you need, you’re going to pay for it. The benefits of an email service provider TOTALLY outweigh the cost. What can an email service provider do for you that Yahoo, Hotmail, or Gmail can’t?
o Send personalized emails to everyone on your list at the push of a button
o An ESP allows you to brand your correspondence
o You can schedule your emails to go out at any time
With an email service provider  – like  Aweber, GVO, Get Response, to name a few. You can see how many people opened your email, WHEN they opened it, and what they clicked on. You can’t do that with your regular email!

Step 3 – Plan your email marketing
Think like a retailer. Retailers know in November that they are going to start promoting Valentine’s Day in January. You need to do the same thing. Grab a calendar and get to work! Find holidays you can capitalize on, even lesser known ones. IHOP, for instance, capitalizes on National Pancake Day! Plan your goals, topics, images, and frequency of emails. Don’t leave anything to chance. By developing a plan, you know the purpose for each email and how it fits into your overall plan!

Step 4 – Be Consistent
Consistency is perhaps the most difficult part of email marketing. Your clientele needs to be able to know what time of day it is simply by the email they receive from you. If you promise to email monthly, do that – same day and time every month. If you promise to email weekly, stick to that. Don’t tell your customers that they will get a monthly newsletter, and then email them daily. That’s a broken promise. Whatever schedule you set, stick to it. An email service provider allows you to schedule messages in advance, so they can be delivered when you want them to.

Step 5 – Test and track
None of this is worth the time and effort if you don’t review your results. One of the benefits of an email service provider is that you can review reports. These reports show you:
o How many people received your email
o How many people opened your email
o What time they opened it
o How many times they opened it
o If they clicked on something

There are other criteria to measure in email marketing. The few mentioned above are basic items to track. Knowing the details above, you can adjust your marketing to better communicate with your audience. You can start to test different aspects of your email marketing to find that ‘sweet spot’ that gets your emails opened and customers buying from you. If you’re not getting the results you desire, you can start to figure out why. For example, if you sent an email to 1000 people, but only 2 opened it, you need to figure out why. Maybe you sent the wrong message to the wrong people. Perhaps the subject line was boring, or your email ended up in the spam filter.  

Email marketing is a great way to build and maintain relationships with your customers. However, if you get it wrong, it can be a major waste of time.
