It’s easy to fall prey to negative thinking. Your mind is really good at taking your fears and doubts and amplifying them. Negative thinking, unfortunately comes easily, automatically and most often, uninvited into your thoughts.
Eliminating negative thinking is Step 7 of my 21 Steps to Success Guaranteed to Change Your Life Forever. Positive thoughts are essential to living a much richer, happier and successful life!
Negative thinking hinders you from positivity. You can’t be negative and positive at the same time! Simply put, what you focus on, you attract and by focusing on what’s wrong in your life, you will attract and create more of it.
Here’s a few tips on handling negativity:
Re-frame/change the occurrence or thought to a good one.
Remind yourself even when things may seem bad, that worrying about them, focusing or creating those crazy stories in your head, will not help.
Don’t let it build up. You wouldn’t leave dirty dishes or trash to build up in your home would you? Think of those negative thoughts as trash that needs to go before it builds up and gets worse.
Make a conscious effort to correct your thinking. Think about it, if you are watching something horrific on television that you just do not want to see… what do you do? You change the channel… or you turn it off.
Address anxiety, fears and any underlying issues that may lead to constant negative thoughts.
Express gratitude and change your environment! (more on that in the next steps)
Mark Victor Hansen and Robert Allen in their book, One Minute Millionaire have an interesting trick for negative thinking. They suggest keeping an elastic band on your wrist and whenever you find yourself having a negative thought to pull the elastic!
Bottom line is that your negative thinking is not helping you rather is hindering your success. Choose to live a more positive, richer and enjoyable life.
