Can you make money online for Free?

 

Had you asked me this question a month ago, I probably would have told you to stay clear of anything for free home business opportunities if you want to make any life-changing income.

The truth is, I believed that any opportunity that could provide a good income required some investment and that most of the free opportunities to make money online were not worth the time, be it referral sites, “Get Paid to” opportunities, surveys etc. Fast forward to today, I kept seeing people asking about Free home business opportunities and decided to get off my high horse and research it and find solutions for those people..

Why I changed my opinion about Free Make Money Online Opportunities

The truth is, I get it.

I understand that not everyone has the money to get started in some high-ticket programs and business opportunities that, although very lucrative, can appear to be a stretch for some people. My stance on that is that when you are ready and willing to do what it takes to make life-changing income online, then you will find a way and sometimes, the free online business opportunity might be the way.

We all have to start somewhere and doing something is better than doing nothing.

The way  I see these opportunities is as a starting point…as a stepping stone. The goal should not be to do small tasks on a “GPT” or “get paid to” site, for pennies. The goal should be to make your first $100- $250 – $500 dollars so that you can eventually join a higher ticket program that you can market and have that opportunity to earn a life changing income.

Having said that, I want this to be a guide – a guide that will eventually get you to a 6 figure income if you want to.

I don’t want this post to be a guide to a few free opportunities that you will join and do nothing with so get this straight – you are not going to make 6 figures watching videos, playing games, doing surveys or referring people at $1 -$5 per referral, but…. let’s get you started.

Avoiding the Multiple Streams of “Expenses”Trap

I remember when Robert G. Allen along with countless others brought the message of multiple streams of income to the masses.

The message was simple…

Creating long term wealth by creating multiple streams of income.

Who wouldn’t be all over that?!

Today in the ‘new’ era of internet marketing and opportunity based home businesses, many are flocking, cash in hand ready to buy the next best thing.

They are looking for ways to increase their wealth and create long term residual passive income by creating multiple streams of income, and the home based business industry is promising them just that.

Is it possible?

Absolutely!

In fact, this industry is one I adore. I have gotten to know it … intimately… the good, the bad and the ugly and along the way, I have discovered a trap that all too may, including myself have fallen into at one point or another: Multiple Streams of Expenses.

… instead of the Multiple Streams of Income they sought.

You see, the model is designed to provide you an opportunity to earn an income but the model is also designed to earn the company money. Nothing wrong with that. That’s business.

To earn income yourself in this type of model, you need to be o.k with that and understand that there will often be upgrades, upsells, events designed to make both you and the company money.

The problem, however lies in you, the business owner buying, buying and buying…

The next upsell.

The new opportunity.

The latest tool.

… and the other tool, and the other tool.

And all the while, you are in the red. You haven’t created the multiple streams of income but the multiple streams of expenses and you are paralyzed and cannot move forward.

How to truly create the income and not the multiple streams of expenses:

1) Focus on the basics.

There’s a lot of broke marketers out there and it’s because they haven’t taken the freshman/undergrad class yet and they already want to jump to their masters degree. When it comes to expenses, they are jumping to the next latest greatest tool, adding a new monthly cost but they haven’t done the fundamentals yet.

I’m all about investing in your business but why not make the sale… just one sale, at the least, to cover your cost before you add another cost that you aren’t even ready for yet.

2) Look for quality tools and resources that cover more than one thing.

You will need tools, there is no doubt about that. Perhaps there is a resource that provides training, CRM, funnels, blog and more all under one.

Maybe your auto-responder provider also has a way to create lead capture pages?

Not only will finding such a resource provide you with your resources under one roof saving you money but will also save you a ton of time having it all, including support integrated under one roof.

I personally use this here.

I can create funnels for all my businesses. ( I have one for my mortgage business and multiple lead capture pages for my online businesses . The system itself can produce income, capture leads and help me build another business on the back-end. It is also home to some of the best home business training on the internet.

Pretty cool isn’t it?

3) Keep your day job.

Some people disagree with this.

There are many who say when you decide to jump into this industry, you gotta decide, burn the bridges and go ‘All in’.

Hmmm, nope, not me.

There is nothing wrong with your day job being your primary source of income while you build your home business. You still need to pay your bills and you need to cover business expenses. There will be expenses. This is a business, not a hobby.

4) Decide what income you need to create.

Know your numbers. I’m not talking about those outrageous goals that I do wholeheartedly encourage and believe in. I am talking about bottom line. .. I need to make X to cover my expenses – and then go do that. If you are not earning income, you don’t have a business. Period.

I can’t tell you how many people I see that keep shelling out the cash but are doing nothing to move forward and earn income. They continue to create the multiple streams of expenses, hoping that it will magically appear with the money they are investing in the next thing, but they simply don’t know their numbers.

Know your numbers.

5) Focus.

Stop looking at the next shiny object until you’ve figured out the first one. It’s o.k to expand when you are ready but you’re just starting from scratch every time and piling on the expenses if you haven’t planted your flag and focused your efforts enough to create a solid income.

Tackle one task, one client, one project at a time. You will be much more productive, less stressed and the work will get done and the results will follow.

6) Invest your earnings.

When the profits show up, invest them.

This is true for home business, job, sudden windfall from winning the lottery (don’t we wish). This is when the Multiple Streams of Income come into play- when we are covering our expenses and ready to make some more money.

This may include real estate, investments, stocks and yes, education or  other income opportunities .

Multiple streams of income are definitely possible. We are in an amazing era when it is not only possible to achieve but achievable  in much less time and with much less monetary investment than ever before. We are also in an era where it is easy to fall into the trap of adding gadget, and widget and app, and opportunity after opportunity until we’ve simply created multiple streams of expenses.

The Importance of Passive Income

Passive income is exactly that. It’s passive . It requires very little effort or attention but produces revenue on an ongoing basis.

Being in the internet marketing business, I have seen a lot of people pass off direct sales and affiliate marketing as a “passive” and while it could be to a certain degree, it is not really passive.

Think about it, in a traditional network marketing or direct sales company, you have the capability of building a team, leveraging the efforts of the team and your customers to create an ongoing residual income … but is that really Passive. It’s an amazing model but requires a lot of time and effort initially to build and consistent effort to keep that residual income going. For the most part, it can continue for a while but if you ignore your team and don’t pay attention to what’s going on in the company or the industry, it could slowly slip away.

Why is Passive Income So Important?

True passive income is the path of the wealthy and a vital part of true financial freedom.

Passive income is not linked to the amount of hours you work. It is independent of time and location. – Now, that doesn’t simply mean that it allows you to sip margarita’s on the beach while the cash rolls in (although there’s nothing wrong with that!). What it does is free up your time, while producing revenue so that you can invest in other passive income endeavors. Now, that’s true leverage.

Passive income may involve an initial monetary investment, or some effort on your part but results in a long term ongoing income based on those initial actions.

Passive income has saved many from financial catastrophe when they are no longer able to trade hours for dollars. It has helped many tide over difficult times.

Some examples of passive include:

Buying real estate that results in cash flow

Investing in stocks that yield dividends

Creating something that pays royalties

Creating a business or product where others sell for you and produce ongoing income for you.

Having personally been in the Financial industry for years, passive income has always been something to strive for.  I just couldn’t ignore it.

Not all of us have the money required to invest in real estate to create cash flow, nor have many created books, products, or become rock-stars to receive royalties from our creations.

But in today’s changing economy, what if there were something that existed that involves a relatively small monetary investment, a few minutes of your time per week, to see an income stream coming back to you fairly quickly.

It does actually exist, and doesn’t require any huge risks or involve any special skills or knowledge.

Bottom line is, true financial freedom and peace of mind can be created in the form of Passive Income and is easier than you think.

Why Seasons Are Critical for Home Business Owners

If you are reading this in the summer months, you are just in time!  Summer is the most important time for your business and the reason is linked to the natural ebb and flow of sales and … human nature.

Look at the retail space… in the heart of the summer … in July… fall merchandise is coming out soon. I haven’t even been to the beach yet  and the boots and fall jackets are out on the shelves. School has just ended but back to school supplies are on the shelves.

Why is this?

Part of the reason  is linked to an innate “survival’ instinct… the need for people to prepare for the future.  Look back to the time of cavemen. They had to be very aware of climates and plan their lives, hunting seasons, shelter around the seasons. 

Today, summer traditionally is a time of rest for those in an employee mindset but for business owners, especially in the home business / direct sales arena, things are very different. You need to be preparing for September. You want to be set up for success. 

There are critical windows of time where individuals are looking for what you have to offer. … September to Christmas is one of those critical windows…. You want to be prepared for this. Here’s why:

Kids go back to school. People want to change. They are looking for something.

If you, as a home business owner are not prepared for this fall, you will lose momentum going into the fall… and then going into New Year. This is because, business runs in 90 day cycles. Whatever you are experiencing right now is a direct result of what you did 90 days ago.

Business building suggestions for the summer months:

Be everywhere

Think about it, most of your competition is on the beach. If you are all over social media, all over their inbox… who are they going to remember in September?

Build your list

If there was ever a time to really concentrate on building your list, it is now. (although I personally believe you should be doing this ALL the time).

If you are taking the time to provide value, via blog, or  social media…

If you are taking the time now to  Capture an audience, Collect leads, and Communicate to them (See my post on this here)  , then Closing when your prospect is ready in the fall, will be a piece of cake!

Sharpen your axe

Educate yourself. Become a professional in the game. Attend trainings and apply your knowledge.

Sharpen that axe so that when the times comes in the fall, you are prepared and ready in just a few swings to achieve your goals.

There Are Only 4 Things You Do In A Home Business

There are only 4 things only you do in a home business…

When one of the trainings I attended introduced this concept to me, I was all over it. 4 key things to focus on in business… and you are golden! Sounds simple? That’s because it is.

Yes, there are a lot of moving parts within these 4 things but they all fall into these 4 basic things.

The truth is, people tend to over-complicate things in business… always looking for more complex things to add to the equation, hoping that this other tool or that other opportunity will fix what is wrong but really if you just take a moment and focus on these 4 basic things to determine where there might be a gap, you may just alter your results in a profound way.

Learn those 4 things, focus on those 4 things… and everything will change.  Some have dubbed these the 4 C’s of business, I call them the Fundamental Four:

Collect

Simply put, you need to have a way to “collect” viewers, eyeballs, visitors.  In an online business, this could include Facebook lives, blogging, banner advertising and social media, to name a few methods. In any other business, it could include anything like print advertising, radio, television, signs… anything that gets people to see you and gets them through the door whether it be onto a website page, or literally through the doors of your place of business.

There could be thousands of ways. You should have a few that you focus on with consistency.

Ask yourself every day… what are you doing to get those “eyeballs”? 

Capture

So, you have got them onto you site, in your store, at your open house… whatever the case may be for your business. Don’t fool yourself, they can be gone in an instant, never to be seen again. All that effort to get them there … wasted! But, it doesn’t need to be that way. The secondgoes hand in hand with the first. Don’t bring them there, only to lose them. Instead, “Capture” them, get their info!

On the internet, in the home business arena,  we us what we call  a capture page, opt-in page or lead capture page – a way to have prospects, potential customers give you their information willingly, usually in exchange for something of value, basically giving you permission to market to them!

Other ways to do this, perhaps in an offline business would be to collect business cards, add visitors info to your phone, offer contests or discounts in exchange for their information.

Got an event going on… ask people to sign in!

Bottom line: How are you capturing people’s information so that you can speak to them over and over again?  How are you generating leads? How are you maximizing the value of the “eyeballs” you are collecting ?

Communicate

Leads are useless unless you have a plan to communicate with them. You must have a method of communicating with people regularly until they are ready to make a buying decision.

Email

Mail/Post cards

Facebook message

Social Media/ Facebook Groups/

Phone/ text and calls

Skype

Blogging

Once you have  collected them, captured them …you absolutely need to have a plan to communicate with these people repeatedly and do it in a way that they want to receive the ongoing communication from you.

Send content and provide value via email or mail (an email autoresponder like Get Response or Aweber is essential). Send them something relevant to them and what had their eyeballs on you in the first place. Send them your blog posts, links to valuable videos. Let them know what’s new, when you have an upcoming event, a webinar … get them to love you and expect you in their inbox, their mailbox, their phone. 

Close

You must also have a  plan to get them in front of your offer so they can make a buying decision when they are ready.  The key here is when they are ready.

They may not be ready when  you first ” Collect” them. When you ” Capture” their info, they are just beginning to trust you… getting to know you enough to give you permission to market to them. 

Communicating with them on a regular basis is where they are getting to really know you and decide if they like you and if what you are about is what they are really looking for. After these 3 are in place, and only then make sure your you have a way to present your offer.

It is essential that you  learn to mass communicate and get your offer in front of a lot of people. Sometimes this is in the form of an email to your list, telling them about your offer. Sometimes, it is a webinar, tele-seminar, or event you invite your list to where you will present them your offer….

The point is… you need all 4 of these to be working in order to make sales…. and if you are not getting the results you want, there is a gap somewhere in the Fundamental Four that you need to evaluate and fill.

What’s with all the Woo-Woo in the Home Business Industry?

Many  years ago, when I got my first taste of the home business industry, I was invited to a wealth tele-seminar. I was super excited thinking I was going to learn more about the compensation, maybe map-out a ‘fast track plan’ with numbers, figures,  or perhaps they might touch on investments, taxes or something of the like. Bottom line, I was expecting a very practical ‘wealth’ seminar.

Imagine my surprise when I arrived and the moderator introduced a guest speaker from Australia who started to speak about changing our behavior in order to “attract’ wealth.

The seminar proceeded to cover such topics as attitude, power of words, our reaction to situations, our behavior towards money. Imagine my surprise when topics like happiness, desire, passion, gratitude and giving took over the conversation.

As surprised as I was, the journey from then on took an upwards direction and my life has never been the same.

What appeared at first glance to be “fluff’ and “woo-woo” was the introduction of Personal Development and a  turning point in my life.

…and I know has been the turning point for many successful people and there is a reason it is so prominent in the home-business industry.

What exactly is Personal Development?

Personal development is not something you do once. It’s a life long process.

Personal development involves improving yourself via daily habits, routines, and making time to reflect on who you are and what you’re goals are.

To give a full explanation of  everything that Personal development entails would be impossible but in a nutshell it involves change, improvement and self awareness and becoming more than who you are right now.

Why is Personal Development so important in Home Business?

Money is a good place to start when explaining the importance of Personal Development in Home Business because it is something tangible… quantifiable.

Think of it this way: We get paid to bringing value to the marketplace, right?

Is it possible to become twice as valuable, or even 3 times more valuable  and make 3 times as much money in the same time? YES!

All you need to do is become more valuable.

The reality is that if you are not very valuable, you don’t make much money.

The famous Jim Rohn, American entrepreneur, motivational speaker and author said it best: “If you want to be wealthy and happy, learn to work harder on yourself than you do at your job”. He stressed that what and who you are becoming is much more important than what you are getting.

He further notes that no matter how much you make, your income almost never surpasses the personal development required to get there.

Think of it this way… Most of what you have today, monetary or otherwise is a direct result of becoming the person you are right now. Does it not then make logical sense that by improving who you become, you will also improve what you have.

Personal development taught me  to take personal responsibility. It taught me  that I can’t change outside circumstances but I can change what I do, how I react and what I change in my life .

If you change, everything changes for you.

“ Work harder on yourself than you do at your job”, says Jim Rohn. “If you work hard on your job, you can make a living, but if you work on yourself, you can make  a fortune.”

Where do you start?

Truthfully, a lot of us already know what we need to do to change and improve ourselves but we aren’t doing it. Start there.

Top New Year Resolutions For Home Business Success

New Year’s resolutions date back to the Babylonians, some 4000 years ago who celebrated in mid-March . The resolutions included making amends for the past and make promises to their gods.

Fast forward to today, there is  a typical association with New Year’s Resolutions  being something you commit to on January 1st, to lose weight, be a better person, quit a bad habit etc. At the stroke of midnight, following a drinking and eating binge, all of sudden, cold turkey, everyone is cleansing and committing to everything good and pure.

Then there’s the anti-resolution phase that I see “trending” now suggesting resolutions don’t work and that you’ll only break them so why do anything.

My take on all this?

Resolutions, goals, making promises, commitments…whatever you choose to call it, all point to positive change and if you stick to that, there can’t be anything wrong with that.

Here are just a few “New Year Resolutions” that will make the world of difference in your home business.

Stop waiting for your “New Year”

Treat every day the same. Dec. 31 or January 1. Monday or Friday. A cold winter day and a summer day. Stop waiting. Stop planning. Stop thinking a new season brings New success. Do, don’t try. Do. Don’t just plan. Do.

Resolving to start something in the New Year or something in the fall or after spring break, although it may seem empowering to you is weak. It’s weak if you keep setting these goals and not taking the action. Why wait? Just take action.

Drop what’s not working and move on.

O.K, let’s get real here. We’re adults right? We are business owners. Get real with yourself.

There’s a huge difference between quitting and moving on and it is important as a business owner that you learn to discern between the two.

If you haven’t worked consistently at something and treated your business like a business and are throwing in the towel looking for something else…I hate to break it to you but you are never going to find that something else.

If however, you are working at something consistently and you are just not moving forward, it’s time to take a good hard look at what you are doing and change it. Although closing shop might be what you need to do and decide to do, first do a little analysis on what’s really going on.

  • Get some advice from someone who is having success at what you are doing. Maybe you just need to tweak something? (having a mentor is imperative).
  • Take a good hard look at your business – is it in line with your beliefs? Did someone tell you that this is the way to go but you don’t quite like what you are doing or believe in it. Either you need to change your belief or you need to find something that is aligned with your beliefs.
  • Learn a new skill. Moving on might just mean that you need to upgrade your skills and replace or upgrade what you currently know.

Don’t quit. Change what needs to be changed and move on.

Create and Share Value

Your earnings are directly related to the amount of value your business provides.

You, as a business owner have the ability to increase your revenue by providing value, consistently… and it is not that hard. Simply share what you know that can help someone solve a problem.

Before you even think about making a sale, you should be thinking about what value you can provide to your prospects.

  • This illustrates your expertise, brands you, makes you visible  and positions you as a leader.
  • Giving away value that your prospects can use, helps build trust.

One of my mentors for example is known to provide extreme value. She was selling education that I was looking for and wanted to purchase. Truth is, I could have purchased it from thousands of other people but I chose to purchase from her. Why?

…Many reasons really, (that I will get into in future posts)  but one of them is due to the tremendous value she was consistently providing before I purchased anything from her.

She was visible. She was in my inbox every day. What I learned from her, I could implement and make a change without buying anything from her. So when it came to buying, she, the leader, the one who was providing consistent value was there….and I chose to purchase from her.

Commit to improving your skills

The most successful people never stop learning or educating themselves. They read. They listen to audios. They go to trainings. They are constantly looking for ways to improve their skillset so that they can be more valuable.

Be teachable. Realize that you don’t know it all and commit to learning and improving your life and you will not be sorry.

Recently I invested in an education program. The free training alone was helping me master skills that I needed to master and within 24 hours of implementing a specific training, I had sales. I had improved myself and was reaping the rewards. I can’t stress this enough.

In this ever changing, internet era, I highly suggest that you get trained in areas that can help increase your reach on the internet – no matter what business you are in. Keep abreast what marketing techniques are working, master at least one and your business will soar.

Be consistent.

Don’t just do this until January 21. Don’t resolve to do this next year again. Do it now even if you are reading this on a random day in July, and do it consistently.

The consequences of not sticking to these may not seem as dire as breaking the New Year promise to those Babylonian gods  years ago but what about breaking a promise to yourself, a promise for a better business… a better life?  

If you are truly committed to make a positive change in your business, or venturing into an online business this year, make that promise to yourself.

Make Your Mess Your Message

If you are building any kind of business online or offline, I am sure you have heard the phrase, “Make your mess your message”. Leaders in the home business industry tell you all the time to tell your story. The truth is, telling your story is much more than just a  marketing technique. It is a way to transform someone’s life and that’s what I am all about!

Storytelling as a Transformational Tool

In the online business arena, I have often been told, “when you  tell your story, you are  ‘getting personal with your prospects so they like you and buy from you”. …but I believe  it is so much more than that.

It is about getting real and personal .

It’s about telling someone about the mess you were in and how you transformed so that they too can transform.

It’s about providing a solution, not just selling -Yes, telling people about your mess and how you got out of it can help you with sales but the reason is not because you used a cool sales and marketing technique but because you had a real problem that was solved. You exposed this vulnerability to the world and the world listened .

Someone out there heard your story and took action because of it.

Marketing Using Your Story

As far as being a marketing tool… YES, your story is a powerful targeting tool to attract your ideal clients. People are attracted to people with similarities in values and beliefs.  If you tell your story in a way that shows the world who you are and what you stand for, that story acts as a magnet to repel or attract clients.

Not everyone is going to be attracted or inspired by your story. And that’s O.K. The people who need to connect with you, the people who you can help and that you don’t need to chase or sell to – those are the people who will come to you eagerly asking for what you have to offer because of your mess and your message.

How to tell Your Story:

  • Sit down and get clear on where you were, what your pains and struggles were… spiritually, mentally, financially . What did that look like? What did that feel like? Get into this with your emotions. Emotions speak to emotions.
  • Think about the exact moment when you made the decision to stop, to stop struggling, stop doing what you were doing and create change. What happened? It’s uncomfortable sometimes but this is what will connect with people.
  • Where are you now, where are you headed? Bring out the fire and the passion that is within you now. Let your audience understand where you were, where you are and where you are going. This way they can see that they can do it too.
  • Use blog posts, Facebook posts, Webinars, Videos etc. to share your story.

Make sure your audience has a way to get a hold of you and connect with you. Yes, I know you are online and you likely want to automate everything you do but trust me … when you get close and personal, that’s when you attract the people who really need you, need to be involved in business with you and aren’t just another prospect who will be gone tomorrow with no real intention to change.

Your story has the ability to impart strength, confidence and hope. When this is your intention, that’s magic. That’s the full circle moment that causes change in both the story teller and the listener. Tell your story!

My Love/Hate Relationship with Automation

We live in an era of automation – push-button this and automatic that. The home-based business industry changed abruptly in the last decade introducing lead capture pages, funnels, autoresponders … and a whole lot of other stuff we were told we needed.

So, I got my autoresponder. I learned how to  build a funnel. I bought the tools necessary for broadcast emails, lead capture pages, tracking clicks and off I went.

The internet, with its promise of international riches combined with all these tools were sure to make us all rich right?

The truth about automation

All these tools are amazing. That is the truth.

But… they are tools. That’s it.

I love that I have a sales presentation that works for me 24 hours a day, even when I am sleeping.

I love that my clients can download a PDF from me, anytime.

I love that I can reach thousands of people at the click of a button. That’s leverage!

I love that there is a way I can share my knowledge and value beyond the one on one’s from the “olden days” .

I love that some of the systems I use have “done for you” traffic and sales.

Systems are awesome. I love it!

But all this comes with a price. What it’s costing this industry saddens me.

I HATE that newcomers to the industry think that riches and success are just a push of a button away and this is what they are being sold on.

They are selling you on lack of action and work. They are selling the tools as the means versus selling them as tools to make your business run smoother and easier….Something you may or may not need depending on the level you are at.

Uploading a bunch of pre-written emails into an autoresponder is easy sure…. But if you are building long term clients and relationships, are you connecting with people who are interested in your offer? Only you can do that.

That snazzy  blogging platform doesn’t brand you. YOU brand you.

Tracking clicks and conversions… awesome.. But you shouldn’t even be looking into that until you know what you are doing. There are many who are told to get tracking links yet they don’t even know what they are tracking, how to read the information they get and what to do with that information. Sad isn’t it?

And so the madness goes on and that’s how it started… my love/hate relationship with automation in this industry.

So a while ago, I decided to stop the madness in my own business. I sent out an email to my list announcing that I was turning off all my autoresponders! And I did. I have one email that goes out to new subscribers that let’s them know who I am, what I do and where to find me if they want to connect with me and then I try to connect with each and every person that reaches out to me.

I make sure that I don’t get too caught up in the automation, that I connect with the people I need to connect with.

Don’t get me wrong. As an Internet Marketer, I buy into the automation to make life easier. A laptop lifestyle is possible with the help of these tools but not because of these tools. Something got lost in the message of outrageous goals and dreams that I believe in so much.

More than ever, I am dedicated to helping people leverage this wonderful thing called the internet to build a business. Let’s just keep the focus where it needs to be.
